Well, we're in Roanoke. Emma Kate and I, that is. We got here yesterday afternoon and hit the ground running. I had to go to the Carilion Employee Health office to fill out a bunch of paperwork and get a TB test. Then, I went to the Employment Office to fill out more paperwork and get a badge made. When I got home, I spent the evening unpacking and looking at the VA DMV website for info on what I need to do about the car. I got to bed earlier than usual because I had to be at orientation downtown at 8 AM, to, guess what, fill out more paperwork!!! You would think that having previously worked for state government that I would have seen all of the paperwork an employer can throw at you. But, if you thought that, you'd be wrong. Carilion definitely trumps the State of NC when it comes to signing and filling out forms. The funny thing is, even with today's all-day orientation, there still wasn't enough time to fill out all of the benefits forms... so I still have to do that this week. Fun stuff.

I'm hoping things will calm down a little bit until Monday. Monday AM I have to go back to have my TB test read, and I think I will try to meet with the insurance agent and at least get my driver's license. Busy, busy, busy!

I brushed Henry today. It was productive, to say the least.

Here are a few pictures from Emma Kate's birthday party. I actually made her cake myself, which was really kind of fun. My Aunt Rexie made some of my birthday cakes when I was growing up, and she advised me during several phone calls on Emma Kate's first cake.

Big News

Well, now that it's official, I can tell you about it. We're moving to Roanoke! Yesterday I accepted a position as a statistician with Carilion Health System. I think my first day will be October 27, although there are still some details to be worked out. I actually applied for this job over Memorial Day weekend, and received an offer nearly two months ago. We've just been waiting for the powers that be to pass the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. My last day of work here will be October 15 (2 weeks) and Emma Kate and I will head to Roanoke on the 22nd. We're not certain yet what Chris will do; more on that another time.

We put our house on the market September 10. Unfortunately we've only had one showing and that person decided she wanted a garage. Our real estate agent says the market has really slowed down. I hope it picks up again soon! We'll be staying with my parents until the house sells because there is no way we can handle two mortgages.

I am really looking forward to this change in our lives. While I am proud of what we've done this past year and I think it was best for Emma Kate and my peace of mind, it has been hard at times. It's been tough to hardly ever see Chris and to have so little time together as a family. It will be wonderful when we can all be together in the evenings and all weekend long again. My parents will be watching Emma Kate during the day and I think that will be great for her. I hope they enjoy it as well! :) And one other benefit that will come a little further down the road is that Emma Kate will hopefully be a big sister someday! I couldn't even think of adding to the family under our current circumstances, but with a support system of family in place I think it will happen. We're not going to get to work on it right away, of course - we need time to get settled in - but when the time is right...

Of course there are things I will miss about Raleigh. The Raleigh Ringers, for one. I've made some good friends here and had a lot of fun. I will probably also miss some of the convenience and lots of options for shopping (even though I don't like to shop, really!). I think I will also miss our house. I'm emotionally attached to it because it's the house EK came home to (a year ago today, no less) but also I think I will miss the layout. Most of the houses in Roanoke are about 30-40 years old so they are not designed with the open floor plans and little extras that I love about our house (think pull-out shelving in kitchen cabinets).

But, there are things about Roanoke besides family that I'm excited about... the mountains, shopping at the co-op, less traffic, the mountains, a slower pace of life, cooler temps, the mountains, snow, did I mention the mountains? I'm going home... :)
