sweep, sweep

Clearing away the cobwebs around here...

I was just looking through some old posts and it actually made me miss blogging. So, here I am. That's the beauty of this, I can leave when I want, come back when I want, say what I want (well, in theory)...

Life has, of course, been busy for us these last few months. Is there anyone who isn't routinely busy? Probably not, so maybe I should just stop saying we are busy. It's a given.

We've been doing a fair amount of traveling. We went up to Roanoke at the end of May for a long weekend. We celebrated my birthday and Chris and I got to do a few things together - just the two of us. We (and my dad) went to the first final game of the ACC baseball tournament in Salem to see Georgia Tech vs. Florida State. The outcome wasn't what I wanted (GT lost that game and the second final), but we had a good time and sat 2 seats away from Robin Reed, the WDBJ-7 weatherman and Chris's lifelong meteorologist hero. It was fun to be surrounded by so many GT fans - a rare experience for me, especially living in Tobacco Road. We also saw Shrek 2 at the Grandin, and that was pretty cute.

June 11-14 we went down to visit family in GA. They hadn't seen Emma Kate since she was about 2 months old and of course lots has changed in that time. She was in good spirits as usual and even coped with the trip fairly well. We went to church with the Hulseys on Sunday and got to see the beautiful new sanctuary at St. Paul's. It was also good to see Uncle Arnold - he's up and about with the aid of a boot and walker, although he's fighting an infection in his foot. He had a birthday while we were there.

This Friday we'll be leaving for a trip to TN to see my dad's family, who haven't yet met Emma Kate. We're driving to Roanoke Friday night and then we'll all be riding together in my parents' minivan for the 12+ hour drive to Finger. I'm a bit worried about how Emma Kate will handle that much time in the car, but we'll manage. At least there's a 4:1 entertainer:baby ratio.

Emma Kate is growing - maybe not as fast as others size-wise (she's 17.5 lbs. and 27.5 inches) - but her physical and mental development is taking off. Pulling up is her favorite activity these days, and she can even stand for a few seconds unassisted. She can follow along with Pat the Bunny and do all of the things the book asks her to do, which is so cool. She's gotten a lot better with her sippy cup lately and seems to be enjoying drinking out of it now. We're working on establishing more of a sleep routine in which she gets up around 8:30, naps from 10:30-12:30, naps at about 4:30 or 5, and then goes to bed at 11. As part of this she's getting used to the idea that Mama can also rock/sing/walk her to sleep, not just Daddy. This is a huge step for me. She continues to have a sunny personality and doesn't seem to be afraid of anything. We're not sure, but it seems like she might be working on teeth (she still doesn't have any).

The furry members of the family are doing well. Henry just turned 3 and I was home for his birthday for the first time ever (no Raleigh Ringer tour for me this year0. Hannah is blowing coat like crazy right now, and we did have a rock-swallowing episode back in April (she finally vomited it up in the vet's office as they were about to put her under for an endoscopy), but she's still the same old sweet companion. Jefferson, on the other hand, gets more and more annoying with each passing day. He's spending a lot of time outside now, mostly by his choice, but sometimes by mine. It seems that being outdoors has made him forget any manners he ever had, and when he comes inside it's only to jump up on the counters, sleep on clean laundry, or otherwise break formerly established rules. This behavior earns him an express ticket right back outside. His health seems fine - it appears that the Purina UR canned food is doing the trick. As annoying as he is, I don't want to see him in pain, so I'm glad he's doing okay in that regard.

So, that's kind of a summary of what's been going on with us. Maybe I'll get back in the habit of writing more regularly now... I hope so, because it was fun to go back and read what I was doing a year ago.
