I have eaten more today than I have in a LONG time... good food too. We had a yummy homemade coffee cake type thing for breakfast, went to the Texas Roadhouse in Christiansburg with Chris's dad (one of those places where you throw peanut shells on the floor), and had steak, baked potato, and salad for dinner with my parents at home. And there is still pound cake with peaches yet to come! Whew!

Gold in Them Thar 'Hillbillies'?: CBS Plans a Real-Life Version of Its '60s Hick HitChris sent me this link this morning with a note that conveyed his sense of unease about the show. I mostly agree with him: in general, this only reinforces the notion that it's okay to make fun of Southerners -- there's certainly nothing politically incorrect about that, as one quote in the article points out. There's only one thing that's bothering me... whoever ends up being on the show will
choose to participate; therefore, they should know what they're getting into. On the other hand, there's the possibility that they truly might not know what they're getting into, because they simply aren't aware of how the world works beyond their own environment or maybe because they are pressured -- lured, even -- by a casting crew who fails to point out potential negatives of the deal. The flaw with this last line of thinking is that it is nearly as prejudiced as making fun of Southerners because it assumes that these people can't think for themselves and that they don't know any better.
Now that I've completely confused myself by talking in circles, let me just say this: reality TV of any type totally turns me off, or rather, causes me to turn off the TV, so I don't expect to watch this show anyway.

We had rehearsal tonight instead of tomorrow night, and I just got home a few minutes ago. For some reason I'm all fired up... looks like it may be one of those nights where I can't sleep after rehearsal. I'll have to find something to do to occupy myself... probably goof around on the computer... imagine that.

This has turned out to be a pretty busy week, at least once I caught up on sleep, but I'm enjoying it. I find that I am much happier and more relaxed when I have some sort of (non-work-related) project to work on -- even better if I have multiple projects going at once, like I do now. The wheels in my head turn constantly, and I've accepted that there's no way to slow them down. However, it's better for me if most of the time those wheels can turn over something relatively straightforward, like a web page design or photography, instead of huge life-altering decisions like jobs, houses, and kids. Oh, I'll think plenty about those things when the time comes, but for now it's in my own best interest to give myself other things to think about. I've only realized this in the last few months... you'd think that after 26+ years of living with myself, I'd have figured it out sooner.

Well, most of the evening has been spent in the recliner, and most of that time was spent sleeping, which is a good thing. I'm in transition from the recliner to the bed and the computer is right on the way, so I'm doing a little e-mail and blogging. No class for me tomorrow, as I have to attend a meeting for work over in Chapel Hill that will take up most of the morning. All the more reason, though, to keep moving towards the bed...

I'm back from the mini-tour to Georgia... a little tired, but not too bad. I want to say a big thank-you to my family who came to hear us in Marietta. It was fun to visit with everyone and to share a part of my life that they don't normally get to see. And of course, now the RRs know a little bit more about me than they did before, right Sydney? I have to admit, the Frosty the Snowman "exposé" was pretty funny... :)
Got a busy little week coming up, with web page work to do, class, and preparing to head up to Roanoke for Labor Day weekend. Wow, I can't believe it's almost September. Where'd the summer go? Tonight, though, I'm not doing any "tasks"... just planning on doing whatever I want to do, which will probably involve kicking back in the recliner, playing with the pooches, or spending a little time on the computer -- or maybe a little bit of all three.

Today's
Friday Five is all about workin':
1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you chose to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not? I'm a research associate for a small state agency that deals with nursing issues. I chose it because it was a logical extension of my education, but I'm finding that since leaving school, my interests are branching out into other areas, such as computers.
2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream occupation be? I would be a professional photographer, probably shooting landscapes, animals, and travel, but not people, and not weddings. Once I had kids, though, I would be a stay-at-home mom.
3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had any influence on your career choices? My dad is an engineer in the textile industry. My mom mostly stayed at home when I was growing up, and in recent years she has worked in insurance. I didn't let their career choices influence my choices of education, but I think that I'm starting to see that my dad and I have a lot in common as far as the way we think and the type of things we are interested in. I wish I'd had the sense to realize that he knew what he was talking about when he tried to steer me towards a degree in a "hard" science.
4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and having a family? Not yet, but I'm giving it a lot of thought. If I had to choose, I'd rather have a family, but then there are those things called bills.
5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world? What is the hardest? Why? Well, I think professional athletes have it pretty easy. I mean, come on, getting paid millions of dollars to play a game? I know they have to work hard physically, but still.... I don't know about the hardest job... I'd guess that being the President of the U.S. is no cakewalk, though.

I figured out today that where we (The RRs) will be staying this weekend in Georgia is only 11.4 miles from my old house in Lilburn:
Of course, I was only 10 years old when we lived there, and that area has experienced incredible growth, so I'll barely know my way around, but maybe some of it will look familiar to me. A couple of years ago Chris and I were traveling up to my aunt's house after flying into Hartsfield in Atlanta, and we got off the interstate on a lark to try to find my old stomping grounds. I had no idea where I was going, but somehow we ended up there. Here's a picture of me in front of that house on Easter Sunday, 4th grade:

Ack. I just got an email from Petco.com that reminded me that "Jefferson's birthday is just around the corner." And they are right - he will turn 2 on September 3. Well, we don't actually know that Sept. 3 is his date of birth, but when we got him from the SPCA in October of 2000, he was about 7 weeks old, so we counted back and decided that was his birthday. I should be able to remember since it falls with Labor Day weekend, but I still forget. Wow, we have "3 under 3"... does that make us crazy? It probably would if they were humans instead of animals.

Last Thursday was Julia Child's 90th birthday, and when I got home from rehearsal that night, she was on Larry King Live. I watched a good bit of the program; Julia Child has always fascinated me. She is so very down to earth and phrases things in a way that just makes me smile. A few tidbits from the interview: she likes Burger King's fries, but won't eat anything with cilantro. Her
kitchen at the Smithsonian opened yesterday -- something I'd definitely see if I got the chance.

Since cutting back drastically on caffeine starting in April, and starting my networking class last week, I've come to a full realization of why I had the habit in the first place: school. If you don't get enough sleep, and you have to sit still in a class while the teacher drones on and on, it
will become a struggle to stay awake, no matter how interested you are in the material. It's just a fact. Especially if the class is early in the morning. This semester is threatening to undo my efforts at controlling caffeine intake, so I've really got to pay attention to getting enough sleep.
That said, this morning we learned about electricity, and I found it pretty interesting. That in itself is kind of amazing for a person trained in psychology and human development.
On another note, Hannah seems to be feeling better, which is good, and tonight we get to go meet our friends' new puppy!! Doggie goodness all around.

Wow, it's 1:30 and I'm already home from the Jeffers recording... we blazed through stuff this morning and followed it up with a lunch that included nuggets from Chick-fil-A... yum! So now I feel like I have a whole weekend ahead of me. Today's gonna include doing some reading for my class and hopefully (cross your fingers) finishing getting RR tour pictures online. Chris has been cleaning house already today, so maybe I'd better see what I can do in that department first. Tomorrow, we're off to spend the day at the beach (Emerald Isle). Woo!

The NC House passed a budget the other day (which is amazing in and of itself), and in lieu of a raise for state employees, they wrote in an additional 10 days of vacation time! Now we just have to see what the Senate does with that. I tell you what, I would much rather have 10 days of vacation. That's actually an entire pay period, which ends up being a greater value for me than the piddly raise they were talking about anyway. And another plus: if I get a raise, I have to give some of that back to the state in the form of taxes, but vacation days are
all mine. What would I do with them? Well, they'll definitely come in handy as far as RR stuff is concerned, and we'll be moving in Feburary, which will probably require some time off work. I could also use them to extend trips at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and maybe even to the horse show in October, if the budget is passed by that time. This is a little like the question of "What would you do if you won the lottery?" I don't know if it's pathetic or not, but 10 free days of vacation does sound a little bit like winning the lottery to me. I'll keep thinking about it because the one thing I wouldn't want to do is feel like I'd frittered the days away.

Class went well yesterday, once I figured out the traffic and parking situation at Wake Tech. Looks like 7:15 will be a good time to leave on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. I'm just gonna need to pack some extra food those days so I don't have to hit the vending machine at work at 5 pm. Anyway, I think this class will be good for my mind -- it was nice to be in a stuctured learning envrionment again after a (mere) 2-year hiatus. Maybe in a month or two I'll have a clearer idea of whether networking is a good career for me. I've talked to several people in the field, and they seem to think that since I already have my BA and MS (granted, in social sciences) that another degree is not necessary. I hope they are right.

Another busy day -- this morning I went on an unexpected business trip to Fayetteville, which, all things considered, turned out to be an informative way to spend the first half of the day. Then, after work, we drove to Burlington to meet my cousin who was in Greensboro due to a death in a friend's family. We had a nice time eating dessert and chatting at Cracker Barrel... my cousin is from Texas so it's not often that we get to see each other. We got home around 10:00 and I've figured out where I'm supposed to be for my class in the morning, and now I've got to get to bed. I'm not sure what traffic will be like, but I'm going to leave at about 7:15 in the morning to make sure I get there by 8:10 when class starts. I am a little nervous about my "first day of school", but I guess it will go all right. I spoke to the instructor on the phone on Monday, and he seems very nice, so that's a good start.

Woo! Road trippin' tonight. We're heading up to Williamsburg so
Henry can visit his girlfriend! Chris took Hannah to be boarded on his way to work this morning, and poor Henry was looking all over the house for her. When I left for work I left one sad dog behind, but little does he know that Tanilla will be waiting for him tonight in the Burg! Nah, in all seriousness, it should be a good trip and it will be good to see the Hindmans and other friends.

The early edition of the
Friday Five (can you tell rehearsal started again tonight?):
1. Do you have a car? If so, what kind of car is it? Yep, a Dodge Intrepid, and Chris drives a Honda Civic DX.
2. Do you drive very often? Every day, to and from work, but not so much on the weekends -- then I usually let Chris drive the Intrepid.
3. What's your dream car? Wow, this is a tough one. I don't really have a dream car, per se. Although if I could learn to drive a NASCAR stock car (and subsequently drive one whenever I felt like it), that'd be pretty cool.
4. Have you ever received a ticket? Yes, for failure to stop at a stop sign (it was a rolling stop). It ranks right up there as one of the stupidest things I've ever done and I will be glad when it vanishes from my insurance this October.
5. Have you ever been in an accident? Well, there was the
time a lady ran into me with her minivan in a parking lot, causing a half gallon jug of milk to break in the floorboard of my car.

While we're on the topic of life decisions, I have a non-announcement to make. It's a non-announcement because many of you didn't know it was even an issue, but it's been a huge issue to us since January. Anyway: we're staying in Raleigh (not moving back to Virginia), settling down, putting down roots, buying a house come February when our lease runs out. It's a long story, and one that I may never feel like telling here because there's so much involved and it's really of so little interest to anyone besides us and a handful of others. But for those of you that did know about the possible move, if you need to find us in seven months, think Raleigh, not Roanoke.

Um, I'm a student again! I just signed up for a course this fall at
Wake Technical Community College. It's an intro-level class in the networking technology program. If I like it, from there I can go into a degree program for an AAS in Networking Technology, or I can go into a certificate program to prepare for the MCSE or CCNA. At this point, I don't know what I would do... the AAS would take about three years to do (groan) while also working full time, whereas the certificate programs could probably be finished in 1-2 years. I guess I need to do more research about what will help me the most in the job market. At any rate, I'm kind of excited to be doing this and it will be good to find out if my interests really do lie where I think they do. Research just isn't quite doing it for me these days.

Reasons why today was a good day:
- The air conditioning is fixed.
- We didn't have to pay for it.
- I worked from home and wore jeans all day.
- I watched Baby Story on TLC.
- Dinner was a good Southern meal of turnip greens, black-eyed peas, and cornbread, followed by Goodberry's Frozen Custard for dessert.

Our air conditioning conked out last night, so I'm writing this from home as I sit here waiting for the repairman to show up. I woke up at 5 am and checked the thermostat; it was 75 and running, which makes no sense for the coolest part of the day when we had it set on about 71 (the cooler it is, the better I sleep... I'd have it set on 65 if I could). Actually, the air conditioner hasn't been doing such a great job the last couple of weeks, and it seems to run constantly, so maybe this is actually a good thing... and a time when I am kind of glad to be renting instead of owning.

Weekend in ReviewThings started off right Saturday morning we finally remembered to try out the bakery that's a short walk from the house, and had some wonderful French toast as a result. We then headed down to Fayetteville for Camille and Allen's wedding. The ceremony was held at
Cape Fear Botanical Gardens (slightly odd website -- not one picture to be found anywhere) and the reception was at the NCO Club at Ft. Bragg. Everything was really nice and I'm looking forward to Camille's return to work so that we can hear all about it from her point of view. When we got back to Raleigh, we headed out to Office Depot to see if they had my planner - no luck. Then we went to Borders, where it was State Employee Appreciation weekend. We each got free coffee and a cookie and sat down in the cafe to look through a huge stack of books. Not long before closing time I got to the last book in my stack,
2002 Photographer's Market: 2,000 Places to Sell Your Photographs, which turned out to be very interesting. I copied down information for a few magazines and I plan to get in touch with them soon.
Sunday morning we attended church and then met friends for lunch at
Cici's Pizza. We got home about 50 laps into the Brickyard 400 and we watched that until the end. I talked to my mom and then we went shopping. All in all, it was pretty productive for a Sunday.
I also got some really good news on Sunday. Remember a few months ago when I
mentioned that some of my photos of the dogs were supposed to be appearing in a book that would be out in August? Well, I hadn't heard from the author since, which had me kind of worried, but she called on Sunday. Turns out that about 5 of my photos made it in, and both dogs are included (I know they're just dogs, but I would still feel bad if one got featured and the other didn't). The book is due out on September 6, so I'll let you know more around that time!
And finally, one other good piece of news: I got my planner. I found it at a different Staples on Sunday after church (for $7.99, mind you, and I didn't have to pay sales tax since this was the weekend for no-tax school supplies). The cover is even green, instead of black. I spent part of this morning transferring everything from my list of important dates into the planner and I couldn't be happier. The PDA is still an attractive idea... maybe next year... but for now I'm quite pleased!

Clarence Moore quits the Yellow JacketsUh-oh, it's not looking good for my GT boys for this season. I miss the good ol' days of Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, and Brian Oliver, and even before that, John Salley, my "sports hero". When I was in 4th grade, we lived in a suburb of Atlanta, and one night we went down to the old Omni to see GT versus NC State. Towards the end of pre-game warmups, my mom and I went down and stood courtside to try to get some autographs as the players headed for the locker room. Mark Price came by first, and barely even stopped - only long enough to tell me that he couldn't do any signing before the game because it would break his concentration and to come back later. I loved Mark Price, and I was crushed (and never got over it). A few minutes later John Salley was headed our way, and I asked him for his autograph. He stopped, talked to us, and signed the program. I was in complete and total awe, partly because at 9 years old I'd never stood next to someone so much taller than me. He's been one of my favorites ever since. When I played basketball in junior high and was on a team where we could actually pick the number we wanted for our shirts, I was #22. I used to like the Pistons because he played for them after college, and even now when I'm flipping channels and I come across his talk show, I'll usually watch for a few minutes. It's amazing how one small gesture can make such a huge difference. Even though I really don't know anything about him, he still seems to me like such a nice guy. And yeah, I still have the program -- it's in a box under the bed in my old room at home.

Ever since I
posted about my beloved planner/calendar on the
Daily Ping, I've been unable to find it
anywhere. I have used this particular style of calendar for the last 10 years. Last year, I bought it at the local Wal-Mart for 6 bucks. This year, Wal-Mart only has the typical Dayrunners and teeny-bopper planners. Staples doesn't have it, and neither does Target. It's an August to July planner, so it really should be in the stores by now. For the last month, I've been carrying around a sheet of paper with a list of important dates beyond July 31. Friends, this is not good (especially since it's now August 2). So what do I do? Well, I can't just get a different kind of paper planner. I've been down that road before and I find I just can't function with a different format. I like a 2-page week with no times printed in... sorry, but my life doesn't function in nice 1 hour, on the hour increments. I also need a two page month with blocks for the days that are big enough to write in, because sometimes I need to see the bigger picture.
I see two possible solutions to this problem: 1) Break down and order the planner directly from the At-A-Glance website for $9.29 plus a whopping $5.35 for shipping, bringing the cost to over twice as much as what I paid last year, or 2) Resolve to go paperless and purchase an entry level handheld, such as the
Palm m100 or
m105. This would be a big enough switch that I think I could deal with the differences, but obviously, the cost is higher. Opinions, anyone?

Friday Five:
1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from? All of these questions are going to be a little bit tough to answer since all my genealogy stuff is elsewhere, but anyway... My ancestors are from England, Scotland, and Ireland.
2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? Well, since they're all there together, how about all three? If I really had to pick, at this point I'd say Scotland, since we only recently found out for sure that a branch of my mom's family came from there.
3. Which would you least like to visit? Why? See the previous question - I want to visit them all.
4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage? No, but that sounds like a good idea.
5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? Again, I don't know for sure without my info in front of me, but I think some McDonalds came from Scotland in the 1700s. We've been here a while, I guess.
Chris should do this too (hint, hint), since his answers would be different and he is always researching his family tree!

I love Thursdays for many reasons, one of which is that it's the last day out of the week that I have to dress up at work. Once the Thursday morning agonizing over what to wear is out of the way, I don't have to think about it again until Monday morning. Getting to wear jeans and a t-shirt to work on Fridays is
awesome.
